Count. It is the tune “smoke gets in your eyes” that I learned from the Don Fagerquist record and then went to the fake book, worked on it one weekend for about two hours to get it fully inside. good narrative.

OK. Here’s your homework. This is how we are going to get this mother done. You said, in a recent correction to what I wrote:

I learned “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” from the Don Fagerquist record and then went to the fake book, worked on it one weekend for about two hours to get it fully inside.

The homework is to explain, in as detailed a way as you can, what you meant by “working on it” and “getting it fully inside.” Because this is what players have to do to completely learn a song. Of course, they can learn it in a less than complete way—that is, you could learn the tune well enough to play the melody but not well enough to improvise on it. You were surely referring to the latter. So: see if you can establish by introspection just what that involves and how it’s accomplished. I’ll try it too, one of these days, but you’re the one who brought it up, so you go first!
